Beijing: US is the Biggest Threat in the Taiwan Straight
The Chinese Ministry of Defense describes the passage of an American ship through Chinese and Taiwanese waters as "provocative."
On Saturday, the Chinese Ministry of Defense protested the passage of a US Navy vessel and a coast guard boat across the waters between China and Taiwan, which Beijing considers one of its provinces.
The Ministry posted a statement describing the move as "provocative" which it strongly condemned and opposed.
According to the statement, the action demonstrates that the United States is the greatest threat to peace and stability, causing security risks in the Taiwan Strait.
The US Navy, on the other hand, portrayed their journey as occurring in international seas and in line with international law.
Taiwan, which has a population of 23.6 million people, was split from China in 1949 during the civil war.
Although the US and Taiwan have no official diplomatic ties, the US maintains a diplomatic representative office in Taipei and is Taiwan's major military weapons provider.
Talks between the Chinese military and a senior Pentagon official recently took place last week, an unnamed US official revealed to Reuters.
