US President Joe Biden called Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday to congratulate him on winning Canada's federal election.
According to a White House statement, the two leaders discussed the importance of working together to rebuild both countries' economies and continue the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Trudeau confirmed an imminent meeting with Biden, affirming his participation in Biden’s virtual summit with world leaders on the coronavirus pandemic on Wednesday.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party secured a victory in the parliamentary elections. The Liberal Party won 158 seats — one more than they won in 2019, and 12 short of the 170 needed for a majority in the House of Commons.
The opposing Conservatives won 119 seats, two less than they won in 2019.
“You are sending us back to work with a clear mandate to get Canada through this pandemic,” Trudeau said. “I hear you when you say you just want to get back to the things you love and not worry about this pandemic or an election.”
