Biden: Republicans have "no sense of American foreign policy"
US President Joe Biden says that Republicans do not understand that the war in Ukraine is about more than Ukraine, it's about NATO.
US President Joe Biden voiced concern that if Republicans take control of Congress in the November midterm elections, total US military assistance for Ukraine may diminish.
"I am worried," Biden said, when asked to comment on US House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy's pledge.
Earlier on Tuesday, McCarthy promised that Ukraine will not receive a "blank check" for aid if the Republicans win the majority of seats in the lower house of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections.
The US president argued “These guys on the other team don’t get it... they [Republicans] said that if they win they’re not likely to fund, to continue to fund Ukraine," insisting that “these guys don’t get it. It’s a lot bigger than Ukraine. It’s Eastern Europe. It’s NATO. It’s really serious, serious consequential outcomes.”
Moreover, Biden significantly noted that Republicans have "no sense of American foreign policy."
Republican decision to cut aid if they win elections "shocked" Ukraine
Ukraine’s negotiator in the halted peace talks with Russia, Davyd Arakhamia said that the US Republicans' warning regarding cutting aid to Ukraine if they win the midterm elections in November has left Kiev in shock.
"We were shocked to hear these comments of Mr. McCarthy, honestly," Arakhamia told the Financial Times on Wednesday.
Arakhamia noted that a short while ago he had visited the US and met with McCarthy, however, at the time “We were assured that bipartisan support of Ukraine in its war with Russia will remain a top priority even if they win in the elections.”
On a similar note, Ukraine's Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko explained that Kiev counted on “continued bipartisan support” from the US for its part in the ongoing war in Ukraine.
