Blast Kills 12 Near Mosque in Kabul
An explosion that targeted a mosque in Kabul left several people dead and injured, said an Afghan interior ministry spokesman.
Taliban supporters and senior figures gathered Sunday and held a funeral service for Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid's mother after she passed away. The memorial service was interrupted by a bomb blast targeting mourners in Kabul.
The funeral service was held in Eidgah Mosque, Kabul, and the explosion that took place there claimed the lives of 15 civilians and left several injured.
A civilian that was on the site ahead of the explosion reported hearing gunfire. "Ahead of the explosion, Taliban members closed the road to hold a funeral service for Zabihullah Mujahid's mother in Eidgah Mosque," he said.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid had announced Saturday that a prayer ceremony would be held at the mosque for his mother following her recent death.
According to an Afghan official, the device was placed at the entrance to the mosque and detonated as mourners were leaving after offering condolences to Mujahid and his family.
Taliban members arrived at the hospital to which the injured were transported. It was reported that they handed over their weapons and took off their body armor to enter the premises and donate blood.
The aforementioned official also said they had arrested three people in connection with the blast.
