Canada to supply Ukraine with lethal weapons
Canada is set to send military aid to Ukraine that includes machine guns and sniper rifles while claiming it "remains committed to a diplomatic solution."
Canada's Department of National Defense announced that Canada will supply Ukraine with lethal weapons and equipment amid Kyiv's ongoing crisis.
Canada's military assistance to Ukraine includes machine guns and sniper rifles, the Canadian Department of National Defense said in a statement.
"Canada will donate over $7 million of lethal weapons and assorted support items to the Armed Forces of Ukraine," the Department confirmed, adding that the military assistance "includes machine guns, pistols, carbines, 1.5 million rounds of ammunition, sniper rifles, and various related equipment."
The Department said, "Canada stands resolute in its support of Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence and continues to condemn Russian aggression as it builds up its military forces around Ukraine."
Despite all the military and lethal aid provided, Canada's Department of National Defense claimed that Ottawa "remains committed to a diplomatic solution and continues to call on Russia to de-escalate and engage in meaningful dialogue."
Western allegations
Kyiv and Western states have recently expressed concern about the alleged increase in "aggressive actions" by Russia near the borders of Ukraine.
On the other hand, Moscow has repeatedly rejected such accusations, stating that it does intend to threaten anyone and is not going to attack Ukraine, pointing out that the Western claims are used as a pretext to deploy more NATO military equipment near Russian borders.
Canada fueling the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen
It seems sending arms to countries involved in wars and conflicts has become a Canadian trend. It is noteworthy that Canada has long been an arms exporter to Saudi Arabia in its war on Yemen.
In 2020, Canada sent close to $2.9 billion of arms hardware to Saudi Arabia. The exports included light-armored vehicles, 31 large-caliber artillery systems, and 152 heavy machine guns.
