Classified documents could open criminal investigation against Biden

CNN reported on Tuesday that the discovery of classified documents in US President Joe Biden's private office which included memos and briefing materials on Ukraine, Iran, and the UK, could lead up to opening a criminal investigation.

The documents were found at UPenn’s Biden Center for Diplomacy in three or four boxes and were dated between 2013 and 2016, a time during which Biden served as vice-President to former President Barack Obama. 

Some of the papers also included unclassified documents that fall under the Presidential Records Act.

They were found on November 2 but the matter has only surfaced to the public recently.

The jurist looking into the matter is Attorney General Merrick Garland.

After he had taken a look at a preliminary report on the documents, he is now examining whether to proceed with a criminal investigation into the matter.

Attorney General Garland appointed the US attorney from Chicago, John Lausch Jr., to look over documents, a move that was made after receiving a referral from the National Archives and Records Administration.

Lausch reportedly completed the preliminary phase of his inquiry and sent initial findings to Garland, after which Garland will decide how to proceed with the matter, a source told CNN.

According to the report, Garland selected Lausch to examine the Biden documents because "he is one of two remaining Trump-appointed US attoneys" and to "avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest" because Lausch wasn't appointed by Biden.
