Denmark's Queen announces surprise abdication after 52 years
After ascending to the throne on January 14, 1972, following the passing of her father, King Frederik IX, Queen Margrethe II, who will retain the title Her Majesty, has announced her decision to abdicate.
After 52 years on the throne, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has revealed her decision to abdicate in her New Year's speech. The unexpected announcement outlined her intention to step down on January 14, coinciding with the 52nd anniversary of her accession, with the throne passing to her son, Crown Prince Frederik.
The Queen ascended to the throne on January 14, 1972, following the passing of her father, King Frederik IX. Delivering the news from Christian IX’s Palace at Amalienborg, she stated, "I have decided that now is the right time. On 14 January 2024, 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father, I will step down as Queen of Denmark. I leave the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik."
'Time is running out'
Undergoing back surgery in February prompted her to reevaluate her role and contemplate whether it was time to pass on the responsibilities to the next generation.
"Time is running out, and the ills are increasing. You can no longer overcome the same things as you once could," she said.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen expressed gratitude to the queen for her dedicated service.
"On behalf of the entire population, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Her Majesty the Queen for her lifelong dedication and tireless efforts for the kingdom," she said.
"Although the duty and position of regent has been handed down for more than 1,000 years, it is still difficult to understand that the time has now come for a change of throne," she said.
"Many of us have never known another regent. Queen Margrethe is the epitome of Denmark and throughout the years has put words and feelings into who we are as a people and as a nation," she added.
In the coming year, Crown Prince Frederik will ascend to the throne as king, and Crown Princess Mary will assume the title of queen, as per the Danish Prime Minister.
With the appointment of a new regent and the presence of a new royal couple, we can anticipate these changes with confidence, knowing that they are prepared for the responsibilities and duties ahead, she added.
