E3 says no fresh round of Vienna nuclear talks
People familiar with the discussions of the E3 regarding the Vienna talks say there is no new round of talks regarding the Iranian nuclear deal.
The European troika (E3), comprised of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, is holding a meeting drawing the itinerary of the Vienna talks, formally the JCPOA, from a European standpoint, Al Mayadeen's correspondent to the Austrian capital reported.
Al Mayadeen's correspondent underlined that the E3 saw that what is going on was not a round of negotiations, but rather technical talks about the Iranian responses to EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrel's plan of action. "The main issues to discuss are in the hands of the US and Iranian parties," sources familiar with the matter said.
"The text of the agreement is on the table, and there will be no new round of negotiations," the sources added. "Iran must take this opportunity to reach an agreement."
Iran was asked not to make any more new inapplicable demands outside the framework of what was agreed upon in the 2015 version of the JCPOA, especially regarding the guarantees asked from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), they added.
The Russian and Iranian delegations to the Vienna talks met for the second time on Friday to discuss the revival of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
The team of Iranian negotiators, led by Ali Bagheri Kani, landed in the Austrian capital on Wednesday to continue negotiating with the other parties to the JCPOA to revive the agreement and remove the sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic.
The new round of talks, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said, will focus on the ideas proposed by the involved parties, including ideas Tehran proposed this week.
Reaffirming Iran's determination to reach a long-lasting agreement that would guarantee the Islamic Republic's rights and safeguard its interests, Kanaani voiced hope that the other parties would pave the way for effective progress in the talks through effective decision-making and giving special attention to outstanding issues.
Major powers and Iran are holding talks in Vienna with the aim of reviving the 2015 nuclear agreement and returning the United States to it following Washington's unilateral withdrawal in 2018 under then-President Donald Trump, who accompanied his decision with the imposition of harsh sanctions on Tehran.
In response, Iran gradually withdrew from its commitments under the JCPOA, seeing that the agreement was no longer binding.
