Egyptian presidential spokesman Ahmed Fahmy on Sunday told Sputnik that "the events in the Gaza Strip" may not only result in long-term repercussions but could also lead to adverse and lasting effects for Egypt and the broader Middle East.

"Egypt has viewed the events in the Gaza Strip as a very dangerous development that could have long-term consequences in addition to serious and direct negative consequences for the national security of Egypt and the region," Fahmy said.

He added that from the onset of the Israeli aggression, Cairo has been working to push for a ceasefire and for humanitarian aid to enter the Gaza Strip.

"The first [direction] is the political part, and its clear goal is to achieve a ceasefire. The second direction is providing assistance since the very beginning of a humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip," the spokesman explained.

This comes amid increased tensions between Israeli and Egyptian authorities, particularly in light of Israeli attempts to occupy the Philadelphi Axis as part of efforts to ethnically cleanse the Gaza Strip of its Palestinian population.

On January 29, Palestinian sources told Al Mayadeen that Egypt informed Palestinian resistance factions it would not allow the Israeli regime to invade the border in Rafah, as it considers this an attack on Egyptian national security.

The sources detailed that Palestinian resistance factions praised the Egyptian decision and considered it a safeguard of borders and sovereignty, noting that Egypt is firm against the displacement project.

The Palestinian factions see the position of Egypt as one of the "most important" to prevent aggression on the border region.

It is also important to note that the escalations in the Red Sea have caused for revenues of the Suez Canal Authority for the month of January 2024 to slump by a massive decrease of 46% compared to the same period in 2023.

In November 2023, the Yemeni resistance announced its intent to target commercial ships and vessels that are solely tied to the Israeli regime. The move was initiated in response to the Israeli-led genocide on Gaza, which has so far resulted in more than 27,000 martyrs.

Transit in the Red Sea remained relatively smooth for the remainder of the ships until the US announced in December 2023 the formation of a naval coalition intended to target Yemeni positions along the Yemeni coastline.

As a result of escalations, several shipping companies were compelled to reroute container ships around southern Africa, which also led to global shipping costs skyrocketing by 310%.
