Erdogan: Ankara will supply its defensive needs from elsewhere if the US does not come through
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Thursday that his country's relationship with the United States is not a healthy one, considering that the US must "sort out" issues over Ankara's purchase of Russian S-400 defense systems, according to Haberturk TV.
It is also reported that Erdogan told reporters, on the sidelines of UN General Assembly meetings in New York, that Turkey paid $1.4 billion for F-35s, which it has not received yet, and this is something the US must first sort out.
The Turkish President also added that Ankara will supply its defense needs from elsewhere if Washington does not come through in this regard.
The two NATO member states' relations experienced much tension this year when Washington sanctioned the Turkish defense industry and kicked Ankara out of the F-35 program in 2019 over Turkey's decision to purchase Russia's S-400 defense, despite the former being a purchaser and developer of the aircraft at some point.
