A US State Department official considered the escape of Russian businessman Artem Uss from house detention in Italy as a serious violation of Italian sovereignty by Moscow, according to the daily Corriere della Sera.
According to an anonymous State Department source, the escape was considered a very unfortunate event, however, the department commended Italy's decision to sanction Uss and freeze his property in Italy.
Earlier in October, the US Department of Justice charged Uss and 4 other Russian citizens with sanction evasion and money laundering. Artem Uss was accused of using forged documents to purchase sensitive US military equipment for Russian defense. In the same month, he was immediately arrested at Milan Malpensa Airport, Italy, on his way to Turkey.
In early November, the US transferred its papers to the Milan court to extradite Uss to the US. Last Friday, Milan's prosecutor responded positively. The court was scheduled to make a final decision on the Uss extradition before he escaped Milan and arrived in Russia earlier in April, and arrived safely in Russia.
