Ethiopian forces recapture key towns
Ethiopian forces have recaptured the towns of Dessie and Kombolcha from Tigrayan forces, the government says.
The Ethiopian forces have recaptured the towns of Dessie and Kombolcha from fighters of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), who had overtaken the towns in the Amhara region over a month ago, threatening to march on the capital.
No TPLF official commented on the government's claims.
Advances were made in both the Amhara and Afar regions bordering Tigray, the government also reported.
Last week, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's office said forces Ethiopian forces recaptured Lalibela. At the same time, Tigrayan fighters said they were advancing on the ground without offering further details.
The conflict between the two parties has been ongoing for more than a year after Addis Ababa accused TPLF of attacking the camps of the national army and stealing its equipment, while the Tigray leadership accused the government of trying to seize power.
