German-French defense manufacturer KNDS has reportedly received 350 orders for its newly upgraded Leopard 2 A8 tank from five different countries, according to German news agency DPA.
The German armed forces have placed an order for 123 Leopard 2 A8 tanks, the most advanced version of the Leopard 2 series first introduced in 1979. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has also signaled plans to purchase an additional 75 units, further reinforcing the country’s armored capabilities.
In addition to Germany, several other European nations, like the Netherlands, Norway, Lithuania, and the Czech Republic, have submitted orders for the upgraded tank, developed by the German-French tank manufacturer.
While KNDS has refrained from disclosing contract values or delivery timelines, the German government estimates that its order of 123 tanks is valued at over 3.4 billion euros (approximately $3.9 billion).
Why demand is rising
The surge in demand for the Leopard 2 A8 comes amid a major shift in Europe's defense posture, triggered by the start of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022. Germany's "Zeitenwende" policy marked a turning point, with increased military spending aimed at restoring conventional capabilities.
Many countries have also depleted their existing Leopard 2 stockpiles after sending older models to Ukraine. The 2A8 is the first completely new Leopard tank model since 1992, featuring upgraded armor and the Israeli-developed Trophy active protection system, designed to counter threats like drones and anti-tank missiles, issues encountered in Ukraine.
According to the company, around 3,300 Leopard 2 tanks, across various modifications, are currently in active service with the armed forces of 23 countries worldwide. KNDS also noted that it is engaged in talks with additional prospective buyers, reflecting the growing demand for modernized armored vehicles in Europe and beyond.
