Explosion hits Madrid, kills 2
An explosion ripped through a four-story residential building in the Spanish capital, killing two people and injuring at least 18 others.
Spanish authorities reported that a powerful explosion rocked a four-story building under renovation in central Madrid, killing two people and injuring at least 18.
Furthermore, Spanish emergency services reported that of the 18 people hurt, most of the injuries were not serious.
On his account, Madrid's Mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida said four people were taken to the hospital, one of whom was in critical condition, and that the cause of the explosion was unknown.
When asked about reports that the explosion was caused by a gas leak, the mayor said it was too early to tell.
“Some work was being done in the building and neighbors said there was a powerful explosion,” he said.
The city of Madrid released a video of paramedics attending to the injured at the scene in the upmarket neighborhood of Salamanca, while police and firefighters cordoned off streets littered with glass and debris.
