Finland's President Calls for Constructive Dialogue with Russia
Finnish President calls on Europe to change its policy towards Russia.
Finnish President, Sauli Niinisto, called on European countries to alter their policy towards Russia and initiate a constructive dialogue with it.
During his speech, in a symposium held to mark the 60th anniversary of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs, Niinisto commented on Russia's relations with the EU and said that instead of seeking cooperation, there is increasing mistrust and back-and-forth accusations. Despite this, he urged Finland's European partners to adopt a broader outlook.
Maintaining relations with Russia, Niinisto said, has become an important pillar of Finland's security.
He urged everyone to "look at the bigger picture," so that the opportunity to "address common threats and challenges in Europe" is not lost.
The Finnish President also spoke of his positive experience in Russian-Finnish relations, suggesting that the policy of mutual respect be adopted throughout Europe, according to Verkkouutiset.
