Former Sudan FM Accuses Egypt, "Israel" of Supporting Coup
Former Sudanese Foreign Minister Mariam al-Mahdi accuses Egypt and "Israel" of supporting the coup that took place in her country and sees the Hamdok-Burhan agreement as a "setback."
Former Sudanese Foreign Minister Mariam al-Mahdi has accused Egypt and "Israel" of "supporting the military coup" in Sudan.
"Even countries that wanted to support the coup did not. Egypt for example was not able to do so. It remained silent," she said.
Egypt, she said, supported by the strong US position during the US-Egypt Strategic Dialogue, was forced to condemn the coup.
Sudan has been experiencing instability since the chief of the armed forces, Abdul Fattah al-Burhan, declared on October 25 a state of emergency across the entire country. This was preceded by dissolving the sovereign council and arresting several political figures in Sudan, including Prime Minister Hamdok.
Al-Mahdi, commenting on a political agreement signed between army chief al-Burhan and Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, said the deal was "a setback that we cannot accept."
The former minister asserted that Hamdok did not consult with his ministers before signing the agreement with al-Burhan.
She, alongside 11 other ministers, had announced her resignation in protest of the agreement that sparked outrage among the Sudanese political forces, who said it was "an attempt to legitimize the coup."
