FSB thwarts 'terrorist' attack targeting Russian aircraft carrier
The operation unfolds after a Russian military serviceman, stationed aboard the carrier, is targeted via online messaging by a Ukrainian operative who used psychological influence techniques.
The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) announced, on Wednesday, that it had foiled an attempt by Ukrainian special services to carry out a terrorist attack targeting Russia's sole aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, stationed in Murmansk.
"The Russian Federal Security Service has stopped attempts by Ukrainian special services to commit terrorist attacks on the heavy aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov in the city of Murmansk," the statement read.
In detail, in March 2024, a Russian military serviceman stationed on an aircraft carrier was contacted through online messaging platforms by a Ukrainian special services operative. The operative employed psychological manipulation tactics to provoke the serviceman into planning a terrorist attack on the warship.
Upon the serviceman reporting the incident to security authorities, comprehensive measures were undertaken under their supervision to gather evidence of the Ukrainians' illicit activities and identify potential collaborators and accomplices in Kiev.
Not an isolated incident
In a related context, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) announced that it had thwarted an attempt by Ukrainian special services to detonate explosives targeting three senior Russian military personnel in Moscow.
"The Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation has stopped attempts by Ukrainian special services to commit terrorist attacks ... against three high-ranking military personnel of the Russian Defense Ministry in Moscow," the statement read.
In further detail, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) stated that they apprehended a Russian citizen born in 1994 for orchestrating the delivery of three powerful explosive devices disguised as gifts to the residences of senior officials within the Russian Defense Ministry in Moscow. According to the FSB, the individual acted on instructions from Ukrainian military intelligence.
"The explosive devices had to be activated after the couriers' reports on the delivery of parcels to the addressees," the FSB stressed.
Simultaneously, the Russian Investigative Committee has launched a criminal case investigating charges of attempted terrorist attack and illegal trafficking of explosives and explosive devices.
This comes as several Western countries, including the United States, recently gave Ukraine the green light to strike targets inside Russia, a move Moscow has called a grave miscalculation.
