Highlighting the current challenges faced by countries in the Global South, particularly the unjust international economic system, the statement underscored the pressing need for a comprehensive reform of the multi-lateral financial framework and the adoption of a more inclusive and coordinated approach.
Furthermore, the draft statement firmly opposed the imposition of unilateral coercive measures and sanctions, emphasizing that they are in violation of the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law.
The statement also placed a strong emphasis on fostering increased collaboration between the Global North and South.
Lastly, member and participant nations acknowledged in the statement the transformative potential of science, technology, and innovation in advancing societies.
During the opening of the G77+China Summit in Havana, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel called for raising the level of economic growth and social justice in the world, and for investing in the necessary factors to reach a new world order.
On his part, advisor to the Cuban President, Jorge Nunez, pointed out that the summit adds an opportunity to strengthen relations with other southern countries and enhance cooperation between these countries.
Representatives of about 100 countries are participating in the Havana Summit, which focused this year on the role of science, technology, and innovation in development.
In 1964, 77 countries from the Global South established the bloc to support their collective economic interests and enhance their joint ability to negotiate. Today, the group consists of 134 countries.
