Greene plans to push for vote on Johnson's ouster next week
US Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene concludes her latest press conference by issuing a direct ultimatum aimed at Mike Johnson, urging him to resign or face termination.
US Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene announced her intention to demand a vote on her motion to remove Mike Johnson as speaker of the House next week, following a lengthy denunciation of him. She stated, "Next week, I am going to be calling this motion to vacate, absolutely calling it."
She suggested that the vote would adversely affect vulnerable Democrats.
"I can’t wait to see Democrats go out and support a Republican speaker, and have to go home to their primaries and have to run for Congress again, having supported our Republican speaker, a Christian conservative, I think that’ll play well. I’m excited about it," she added.
Greene also expressed anticipation for how her motion would affect Republicans with whom she disagrees, stating, "[I] also can’t wait to see my Republican conference show their cards and show who we are. Because voters deserve it. Is the Republican party … have they finally learned their lesson? Have they finally heard the message from voters back at home? Are they willing to actually fight? Are they going to just keep going along to get along? Because it’s really easy to do that in Washington DC."
She concluded the press conference by issuing a direct ultimatum aimed at Mike Johnson, urging him to resign or face termination.
Greene further emphasized the urgency for Johnson to contemplate his decision over the weekend, urging him to make the "right" choice for the party by stepping down promptly.
She stressed the need for the Republican conference to swiftly elect a new leader, framing it as crucial for aligning with President Trump's agenda.
Greene also denounced any potential endorsement from Democratic leadership, particularly from Hakeem Jeffries, insinuating that such associations were unacceptable for a Republican speaker. Furthermore, she hinted at an impending vote scheduled for the following week.
Greene called upon her colleagues to brace themselves for it, asserting that it was imperative for the future of the party and the nation.
A flashback
Last month, Greene declared her refusal to accept the leadership style demonstrated by House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson, likening it to a "total surrender" to Democratic demands.
In March, Punchbowl reported that Greene submitted a petition to remove Johnson from his leadership position after Johnson supported $1.2 trillion federal budget measure over opposition from many House Republicans.
In February, the Senate passed a $95 billion foreign aid bill, which includes approximately $60 billion designated for Ukraine. However, in the House of Representatives, Johnson delayed its progress to instead focus on budget legislation and exploring alternative avenues for Ukraine funding.
