Unknown gunmen opened fire against servicemen positioned at a checkpoint concerned with ensuring the security of Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei during his visit to a town on the Mexican border.

Guatemalan army spokesperson Rubén Téllez said the attack on the presidential delegation took place in the La Laguna villa in the province of Huehuetenango.

"Personnel of the Guatemalan army halted a vehicle that approached their location," the spokesperson detailed. "The occupants of the vehicle, upon seeing the presence of the military personnel, started firing, to which the soldiers responded, leaving one person wounded while the rest of the occupants of the vehicle escaped in the direction of Mexico."

The wounded individual, possibly Mexican, was shot in the leg and later taken for treatment. It is important to note that Giammattei was not in any danger, as he was nowhere near the shooting.
