Hungary's Orban says EU wants war with Russia, dragging Europe with it
Orban says that rather than "looking after the interests of the people," the EU leadership was "imposing their own ideologies" on the citizens of member states.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban declares that the EU leadership is pushing the bloc towards war with Russia, while neglecting the interests of their own people.
His op-ed in the Magyar Nemzet newspaper on Saturday stated, “To make matters worse, the Brussels bureaucracy that lives in a bubble has made a number of bad political decisions in recent years... “Europe is increasingly being dragged into a war, in which it has nothing to gain and everything to lose.”
“The bureaucrats in Brussels want this war", he said, stressing that their aim is to defeat Russia and to do so, "They keep sending the money of the European people to Ukraine. They have shot European companies in their feet with sanctions. They have driven up inflation and they have made making a living difficult for millions of European citizens."
Orban also said that rather than "looking after the interests of the people," the EU leadership was "imposing their own ideologies" on the citizens of member states.
Blinded by war goals
Earlier this month, Orban warned that the West is on the brink of a potential clash with Russia and there is a need for pro-peace leadership to prevent such a scenario.
Speaking in an interview with TV2 just before the European Parliament elections, Orban mentioned discussions and debates surrounding the possibility of sending more weapons and troops to Ukraine, suggesting that this trajectory could lead to war.
He pointed out that initially when the conflict began in 2022, most EU countries, including Germany, committed to providing only non-lethal aid to Kiev. But there has been a notable shift, with Western powers subsequently supplying a variety of weaponry and ammunition to Ukraine.
"At the rate this is going, it is not an exaggeration to say that we are centimeters away from the final stop when Western European or American soldiers appear in the territory of Ukraine, we are within inches of a direct collision [with Russia] at this moment," he said, adding that most leaders currently in power in the West "don't see it, they want war."
This comes after European Union leaders meeting in Brussels nominated von der Leyen yesterday for a second term as head of the European Commission, while Estonian PM Kaja Kallas has been selected as the EU's new foreign policy chief, replacing Spain's Josep Borrell following a late-night agreement on top leadership positions.
