Illegal foreign troops must leave Syria, Iran says
Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations called on the UNSC to condemn "Israel's" illegal occupation of the Golan Heights.
Tehran supports the Syrian government's call for the total departure of "all illegal foreign military forces" from the war-torn nation, said Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations.
Iravani on Wednesday remarked during a UN Security Council meeting about the situation in Syria that the unlawful deployment of foreign armed troops has created favorable conditions for terrorist activity within Syria.
"The unhindered movement of terrorist groups, including ISIS, into Syrian territory, where foreign forces are illegally present, poses a serious threat to both regional and global peace and security," Iravani detailed, adding that they "support the legitimate demands of the Syrian Government for the complete withdrawal of all illegal foreign military forces from Syrian territory."
The US has maintained an illegal presence and troops in Syria under the guise of fighting ISIS since 2014.
The axis of resistance played a major role in the defeat of ISIS in late 2019, something the US does not acknowledge.
Last month, Al Mayadeen's sources revealed that the US is fortifying its occupation bases surrounding the Conoco and Al-Omar gas and oil fields respectively using large reinforcements of its paramilitary proxies as part of its ongoing theft operations of Syrian resources in the north.
The heightened readiness of US occupation forces comes as the Syrian Armed Forces, its allies, and local Resistance groups started in the past few months to carry out operations against the American military, in addition to gradually reclaiming land for the government's control.
The Iranian ambassador further stated that the occupation of specific parts of the Arab country by illegitimate foreign forces, as well as aggressions by the Israeli authority and terrorist groups, have caused the Syrian people long-term suffering.
He urged the Security Council to take a strong stance and condemn the violations, "compelling the Israeli regime to cease its aggressions and put an end to the occupation of the Syrian Golan," which has been occupied by "Israel" since 1967.
On July 19, the Israeli occupation carried out attacks on the outskirts of the Syrian capital of Damascus.
On August 7, Israeli airstrikes killed four Syrian Arab Army soldiers and wounded four others in the vicinity of Damascus as Syrian air defenses engaged the hostile targets.
"We strongly condemn the repeated aggressions and violations of Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity by the Israeli regime," Iravani added.
"These reprehensible acts, like the recent terrorist attacks on Damascus and its surrounding areas on August 21st, deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure, constitute a flagrant breach of international humanitarian law and the UN Charter. They also pose a grave threat to regional peace and stability."
