Independent High Electoral Commission Issues Statement on Elections
The Independent High Electoral Commission in Iraq announced that the election results would be announced within hours, calling the elections themselves a source of pride.
The results of the Iraqi legislative elections will be announced in the coming hours, the Independent High Electoral Commission, the body governing the Iraqi legislative polls, announced Sunday.
After polls closed, the commission assured all Iraqi citizens that they had the right to file any complaint under anonymity and confidentially.
"We will issue a detailed report about the elections within two hours," the commission said, reminding that the United Nations would publish their report on the Iraqi elections within a month, as per usual.
The elections were a source of pride for the commission, its statement said, commending the Supreme Security Committee's role in securing the early elections.
The IHEC clarified that the malfunctions that affected voting machines were not 'malfunctions' but a timing issue.
Several polling stations in the Iraqi parliamentary elections have faced some expected technical problems, announced Imad Jamil, member of the media team of the Iraqi Electoral Commission.
Jamil later announced that the machines were back in service after the problems were resolved.
The Iraqi elections started Sunday morning, as polling stations opened in the early morning for 25 million Iraqis. The IHEC had announced the polls would close at 6 PM.
IHEC also announced that the turnout at the special elections held Friday was 69%, and the special polls saw around 1.2 million members of the security forces, prisoners, and the displaced participating in the national process.
