India a 'great 'power' but will never be formal US ally: US official
US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell described India as "probably the most important relationship for the United States to get right."
India is a great power but will never be an ally or partner of the US, US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell stated at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on Tuesday. However, he stressed that maintaining good relations with New Delhi is strategically crucial.
Campbell described India as "probably the most important relationship for the United States to get right," and mentioned the significant influence of the Indian diaspora in the US.
He noted India's desire to remain an independent state, noting that "India is also a great power. It has its own beliefs, its own interests." He added that while India will never be a formal ally or partner, it is still possible to have a strong relationship as allied nations on the global stage.
Campbell also expects more direct Indian engagement in Ukraine, praising New Delhi's efforts to "play a responsible role globally."

These remarks followed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Russia earlier in July, where he held discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The visit, which coincided with a NATO summit in Washington, drew intense scrutiny from the West.
Modi appreciated the open exchange of opinions with Putin on the Ukraine crisis, countering Western efforts to isolate Russia. The Indian leader noted that "very interesting ideas" and "completely new views" had emerged from the talks.
Despite Western pressure, India has maintained its long-standing relationship with Russia throughout the Ukraine conflict, stressing its commitment to strategic autonomy.
Modi is also reportedly planning a visit to Kiev next month, with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar confirming increased contact between New Delhi and both Ukraine and Russia.
