India's Modi claims to be godsent as elections near conclusion
Many of his supporters are unable to name other cabinet members or local BJP candidates due to high levels of power centralization around Modi.
As India's multi-stage election process nears its end, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sparked controversy by claiming that he has been chosen by a divine force to accomplish a purpose.
In an exclusive interview with NDTV news channel on Sunday, Modi stated, "I am convinced that 'Parmatma' (God) sent me for a purpose. Once the purpose is achieved, my work will be done. This is why I have completely dedicated myself to God."
Modi, seeking a third term in office, elaborated on his belief that God guides him in his work, albeit without revealing the larger scheme. "He does not reveal his cards, just keeps making me do things. And I cannot dial him directly to ask what's next," he said.
The Prime Minister, known for his strong Hindu nationalist stance, has cultivated a cult of personality within his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Many of his supporters are unable to name other cabinet members or local BJP candidates due to high levels of power centralization around Modi.

Under Modi's leadership, the BJP has actively promoted Hindu-fascism in public life. Notably, Modi took a leading role in the rituals at the inauguration of the Ayodhya temple in January, traditionally the domain of Hindu priests.
Modi's candid remarks about his divine mandate mark a departure from his usual reserved demeanor. "The wily weaving of religion with politics for a country where faith is an inextricable part of everyday life is the BJP's USP. Mr. Modi's claim is the logical culmination of the BJP's dominant theme," wrote The Telegraph in an editorial.
While some laud Modi's energy and dedication, others, like Congress Party leader Rahul Gandhi have ridiculed his statements. "If an ordinary person had made the statements Modi has been making recently, they would be taken directly to a psychiatrist," Gandhi said.
In response to queries about whether Modi suffers from a "God complex," BJP spokesperson Sanju Verma praised his boundless energy and tireless work ethic. "He is bestowed with boundless energy," Verma remarked as he mentioned Modi's packed schedule and relentless campaigning efforts.
