During his trip to Nicaragua, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian displayed Tehran's strengthening ties with Managua, emphasizing on Iran's growing relations with Latin America.

“Iran is serious in looking at Latin America within the framework of its foreign policy doctrine. We are witnessing the expansion of relations between Iran and Nicaragua,” he said, in a meeting alongside his Nicaraguan counterpart Denis Moncada in the capital, Managua.

Cooperation between Nicaragua and Iran has been fortified in the energy sector, which Amir-Abdollahian showed satisfaction with by confirming that a joint economic commission is due to be held regularly by both nations.

“Our ambassadors are actively following up relations and I am happy that the positions of both countries regarding international issues are on the right track,” he expressed during a meeting with his counterpart, Denis Moncada, adding that a memorandum of understanding for mechanism on cooperation and political consultation has been signed by both parties.

Amir-Abdollahian described US sanctions against countries such as his and Venezuela as a “terrorist threat” used as leverage.

Moncada commented on the cooperation document by announcing that it is the first with Iran in 2023 noting that 14 such documents were signed last year between both nations, stressing the reinforcement of joint work between both nations to attain peace and maintain the rights of the two nations in the face of Western-led sanctions.

Amir-Abdollahian's trip to Nicaragua comes after a visit to Mauritania. The senior diplomat is anticipated to visit Venezuela next.
