Iran, Pakistani Foreign Ministries Hold Talks on Afghanistan's Neighbors
The Iranian FM invites his Pakistani counterpart to the conference on Afghanistan, which will discuss endeavors to help form a capable government in Afghanistan.
The Pakistan Foreign Ministry announced that Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein AmirAbdollahian had invited his Pakistani counterpart, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, to participate in the summit of foreign ministers of countries neighboring Afghanistan.
The summit will be held in Tehran.
The Directorate of Public Relations at the Pakistani Foreign Ministry stated that Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi discussed, during a call with his Iranian counterpart last Tuesday, the latest developments in the region and the situation in Afghanistan.
The conference, a continuation of first-round talks
In another context, the Iranian Foreign Ministery said today that Tehran would host a meeting for Foreign Ministers of Afghanistan's neighboring countries next Wednesday, adding that "Tehran plays an active role in the Afghan issue," stressing "the need to stabilize security in Afghanistan."
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Saeed Khatibzadeh, stated that the conference will be a continuation of the talks that began via video call in their first round. The ministers of the six countries will focus on ways to assist the formation of a capable government in Afghanistan with the presence of all ethnicities, in order to maintain peace and security, Khatibzadeh continued.
Qureshi: We hope that Afghani leaders take measures to counter terrorism
In turn, Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi expressed his appreciation of the stance of his Iranian counterpart regarding Afghanistan's neighboring countries. He praised Tehran's position and role in the region adding that "Islamabad supports all endeavors and solutions in the region."
Qureshi hoped that the leaders in Afghanistan will take real measures to prevent terrorist organizations from having a foothold in this country.
The Pakistani minister highlighted his optimism about the joint conference to be held between the countries neighboring Afghanistan, considering it a substantial step towards establishing peace and stability in the region and enhancing cooperation in it.
The Tehran Conference
The Iranian Foreign Minister's invitation to his Pakistani counterpart came as a continuation of the first round of talks. The conference is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, hosted by the Islamic Republic in Tehran.
The first round of talks between Afghanistan's neighboring countries was held virtually and hosted by Pakistan, with the participation of the foreign ministers of Iran, China, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The second session will be held on Wednesday in Tehran with the participation of Russia.
