Iran UN Ambassador: Tehran requested verifiable guarantees from US
Iran's UN envoy, Russia's deputy UN envoy, and US deputy UN envoy, comment on JCPOA developments.
Iran's ambassador to the UN, Majid Takht Ravanchi, said on Thursday that Tehran has requested from Washington some verifiable guarantees that the latter will not again leave the nuclear deal.
He further said that the E3 countries - comprising France, Germany, and the United Kingdom - disregarded the promises related to the JCPOA and left Tehran with no option but to put a break on its commitments to the accord.
"Unfortunately, the E3 disregarded their obligations and promises, leaving Iran with no choice but to utilize its rights under paragraph 26 and 36 of JCPOA to partially suspend its commitments on May 8, 2019," Takht Ravanchi said during a UN Security Council meeting on Iran and its compliance with resolution 2231.
Following a UNSC meeting, Takht Ravanchi also said that his country approached the Doha talks with the aim of reaching results, qualifying the talks as serious and positive, further pointing out that Tehran will remain in contact with the EU's coordinator, Enrique Mora, during the next round of talks.
Russia: No alternative to JCPOA
Russia's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UNSC, Dmitry Polyansky, said Moscow sees no alternative to the JCPOA and announced its support for efforts to restore it.
Polyansky further told a briefing on Iran that his country's duty is to safeguard the deal and revive it.
The Russian Federation wholeheartedly supports negotiations to resume implementation of the JCPOA through the initially agreed upon frameworks," Polyansky told the briefing.
US: Iran should drop beyond JCPOA demands
As for the US' Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Richard Mills, he stated during the UNSC meeting that Washington believes Iran should drop demands that he qualified to be beyond the JCPOA, if they want the deal to be revived.
"We can only conclude a deal and implement it if Iran drops its additional demands that are outside the scope of the JCPOA," Mills said.
Mills further thanked the EU for facilitating indirect talks between the US and Iran, voicing his "disappointment" that during Borrell's visit to Tehran on Saturday, and in the talks conducted in Doha this week, "Iran continued to make demands that go well beyond the JCPOA."
