Iraq, Tunisia call for criminalization of normalization
Tunisia and Iraq are once again considering legislation to make normalization with “Israel” illegal.
On Sunday, the Tunisian National Bar Association urged authorities to criminalize normalization in a "legal and explicit capacity" and condemned Israeli daily assaults on Palestinians.
In a statement, the commission's counsel stated that "the council recalls its principled position on all forms of normalization with the Zionist enemy, and calls on the existing authorities to criminalize normalization in a legal and explicit manner."
The council “is following with great concern the continuation of the daily attacks that affect the Palestinian Arab people," the statement added.
It has also urged Tunisian civil society organizations to hold demonstrations and rallies in solidarity with the Palestinian people, their land, and holy sites.”
In the same vein, Tunisia's Workers' Party organized a sit-in in front of the capital's municipal theater on Saturday to condemn Israeli attacks against Palestinians, calling for considering legislation to make normalization with “Israel” illegal.
In the same context, the largest coalition in the Iraqi Parliament, the "Save a Homeland" bloc, announced on Sunday that it had submitted a draft law to the parliament's presidency that would criminalize normalization with “Israel”.
This was announced at a press conference held at the Parliament building by representatives of the coalition that comprises the Sovereignty Alliance, the Kurdistan Democratic Party, and the Sadrist Movement, which have 175 seats in Parliament out of 329.
"Today we announce the law criminalizing normalization with the Zionist entity (Israel), and cutting off the road for anyone who wants to establish any kind of relations with this entity," Hassan Al-Adari, the head of the Sadrist bloc in parliament, said during the conference.
"The Sadrist bloc, along with its allies in (Save a Homeland), submitted the draft law proposal to the parliament's presidency," he added.
Al-Adari detailed that “the proposed law includes 10 articles, each article containing a set of points.”
Muqtada Al-Sadr, the Sadrist movement's leader, announced on Saturday that the Sadrist bloc and its allies intend to put forward a draft proposal to criminalize normalization for a vote in Parliament.
Only six Arab countries have relations with "Israel", namely Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan.
