Iraq: High Electoral Commission Says 70% of Voters' Cards Distributed
The High Electoral Commission announces it has distributed 70% of the voter cards, and Iraqi PM Mustafa al-Kadhimi conducts talks to ensure the elections' success.
The Independent High Electoral Commission said that it is currently working on distributing cards at registration centers, clarifying that the number of people who have received their cards has increased over the past two days.
It also added that the distribution will continue until October 5, meaning 48 hours before the ballots open.
Iraqi PM Mustafa al-Kadhimi held talks with First Deputy Speaker Hassan al-Kaabi on Sunday regarding the elections, with a statement by the former's office that the meeting discussed how to make the elections successful and enforce cooperation between the legislative and executive powers so that October's elections are a true expression of the Iraqi people's will.
The Head of the EU's Election Observation Mission, Viola Von Cramon-Taubadel, described the coming elections as historic, stressing that preparations are ongoing and that no effort will be spared to ensure voting integrity and voters' safety.
