The Iraqi parliament’s speakership set Monday, February 7 as a date for the session to elect the President of Iraq.
Parliament also tweeted that the speakership held a meeting today regarding the procedure of the president’s election, clarifying that the nominees who were found to fulfill the conditions for election will have their names announced next Monday, on election day.

On January 23, The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) held a meeting in Sulaimaniyah, in the presence of Bafel Jalal Talabani, during which he discussed the current political situation in Iraq and the constitutional entitlements of Iraqi Kurdistanis in establishing the new federal government.
The leadership council discussed the options before the PUK and decided to "provide full support for the success of the PUK candidate comrade Barham Ahmad Saleh for the post of president of the republic."
Earlier this month, Mohammad al-Halbousi was voted Speaker of Parliament, winning 200 - 14 against his rival Mahmoud al-Mashhadani.
