Israeli occupation won't grant prisoner Walid Daqqa an early release

Israeli occupation authorities refuse to release Cancer-stricken Palestinian Prisoner Walid Daqaa from his imprisonment.

Israeli media reported earlier on Monday that the occupation's prison parole board has refused to grant prisoner Walid Daqqa an early release.

The Conditional Release Committee of the Israeli Prisons Administration rejected a request by Daqqa's lawyer to release the Cancer-stricken prisoner, claiming that the “Prevention of Terrorism Law” applies to him, despite the fact that his actual sentence was completed on March 24, 2023.

The Wa'ed Prisoners' Association reported that Daqqa refrained from taking medication after being deprived of contacting his family and explained that the "Ramla" prison clinic administration is diligently using the most heinous means to abuse the prisoner, "in order to slowly liquidate him."

Wa'ed called on the International Red Cross community to intervene and end the occupation's practices against Daqqa and other sick prisoners, especially those residing in the "Ramla" prison clinic.

It is noteworthy that on May 31st, a court session was held in "Ramla," during which the committee refused to consider releasing the prisoner and referred it to the life imprisonment committee. At the time, his family, the campaign, and the authorities said that this decision was tantamount to a death sentence against him.

He was admitted to the hospital on March 23 following a sharp deterioration in his health condition after he was diagnosed on December 18, 2022, with myelofibrosis, a rare cancer that affects the bone marrow. Daqqa had been left without serious treatment for years.

Palestinian prisoners in Israeli occupation prisons began partially closing the prison's interior sections on June 13 and disrupting life inside the prison in protest of the "Ramla" prison administration's treatment of Daqqa.

Last month, the Palestinian Ministry of Detainees and Ex-Detainees confirmed that Israeli occupation authorities returned on May 25 Daqqa to "Ramla," just days after he was transferred to "Assaf Harofeh" hospital due to his deteriorating health condition.

The Ministry pointed out that the "Ramla" prison clinic lacks the minimum necessities of medical care, warning that the decision confirms that the Israeli occupation is pursuing its policy of deliberate medical negligence. It also held the occupation responsible for the Palestinian prisoner's life.

Who is Walid Daqqa?

Walid Daqqa has been detained since 1986 and was sentenced to life imprisonment for resisting the occupation. His sentence was later decreased to 37 years.

In 2018, two years were added to his sentence, and a few years ago, his wife, Sanaa Salameh, was able to give birth to their daughter, Milad, after smuggling Daqqa's sperm from prison. Daqqa is considered one of the most prominent writers and thinkers of the Palestinian Captive Movement.

In April, the number of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli occupation prisons reached nearly 4,900, including 32 female prisoners and 170 minors.

As for ill prisoners, they numbered 700 prisoners suffering from several diseases, including 24 prisoners suffering from cancers and tumors of varying degrees.
