An explosion struck a mosque situated within a school compound in North Jakarta’s Kelapa Gading district on Friday, injuring dozens of worshippers during afternoon prayers. According to city police chief Asep Edi Suheri, authorities have opened an investigation to determine what triggered the blast.
A total of 54 people were taken to nearby hospitals, with injuries ranging from light wounds to severe burns. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, and Indonesian networks KompasTV and MetroTV broadcast images of ambulances lined up outside the school while police cordoned off the area.
Despite the number of casualties, early visuals from the site showed the mosque itself did not sustain major structural damage. The cause of the explosion remains under inquiry.
