Jinping, Biden to Hold Virtual Summit on Tuesday
China's President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Joe Biden will holds talks via a virtual meeting on Tuesday morning, Beijing time (Monday evening for Washington).
Official Chinese sources said on Monday that it is expected that President Xi Jinping will make use of his first virtual meeting with US President Joe Biden to warn the United States to "step back" on the Taiwan issue, according to Chinese state media editorials printed on Monday.
Biden and Xinping are set to meet on Tuesday morning, Beijing time (Monday evening in Washinton), as tensions between the two countries continue amid a range of issues including trade, technology, Xinjiang Province, and especially Taiwan.
China's English-language daily, "China Daily" said in its op-ed on Monday that it is likely that Xi will tell the US President that "Beijing is resolved to realize national reunification in the foreseeable future no matter the cost."
Taiwan is China's ultimate red line
China's Global Times noted in its editorial that "the Taiwan question is the ultimate red line of China," adding that "in order to reduce the risk of a strategic collision between China and the US, the latter must take a step back from the Taiwan question and show its restraint."
China's Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, urged Washington, in a phone call with US State Secretary Antony Blinken on Saturday, to stop sending wrong signals to "Taiwan independence" forces.
China urged the United States on October 22 to tread carefully on the topic of Taiwan after President Joe Biden said that Washington would defend the island against any "attacks" by China.
