Jordan to host Syria's FM during 5-way Arab summit
Amman is preparing to host a meeting with the foreign ministers of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Syria in order to find solutions to the Syrian crisis.
Amman is preparing to host a meeting of the foreign ministers of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad, on Monday.
Sinan Al-Majali, the official spokesperson for the Jordanian Foreign Ministry, said the meeting comes as a continuation of the consultative meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, Jordan, Iraq, and Egypt, which was hosted by Saudi Arabia in Jeddah on April 14th.
According to Majali, the summit aims to build on contacts made by these countries with the Syrian government, as well as the Jordanian initiative, to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis.
Earlier, a Jordanian official announced that the Kingdom proposed forming a joint Arab group to deal directly with the Syrian government on a detailed plan to end the conflict.
The official stated that a "step-by-step" approach was being taken to end the crisis in Syria and that returning Syria to the Arab League was of utmost priority for Jordan.
It is noteworthy that Syrian and Arab relations have been improving recently as Syrian FM Faisal Mekdad visited Saudi Arabia in April again after 12 years.
In early April, Mekdad visited Egypt after an official invitation from the Egyptian PM as well.
