Khatibzadeh: Iran Is Pursuing Peaceful Nuclear Program
His comments came in response to the IAEA claims.
Iran stressed the compliance of its nuclear program with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, in response to the latest report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which claims that Iran is accelerating the production of enriched uranium.
Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh reassured the IAEA that all of his country’s actions took place within the framework of the nuclear agreement, noting that the boost in enrichment came in response to the violations of the agreement by several parties, notably the three European parties involved.
Khatibzadeh noted that Iran is pursuing its peaceful nuclear program “only on the basis of its sovereign needs and decisions, and within the framework of its commitments in the Safeguards Agreement, unless the full and unconditional implementation of the nuclear agreement is resumed by the US and other involved parties."
US President Joe Biden is seeking to return to the agreement, and indirect talks into this matter began in Vienna last April, but the last session, which was held on June 20, did not witness any tangible progress.
The European Union spoke of a possible resumption of talks in early September, while Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi welcomed efforts to lift US sanctions that stifle his country's economy.
