Lavrentiev: Iranian-Russian Talks on Syria Important
Syrian, Russian, and Iranian delegations meet to discuss the peace process in Syria.
Today, Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian discussed in Tehran with a Russian delegation that includes the Russian President's Special Envoy to Syria Alexander Lavrentiev and Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin, the situation in Syria.
In the meeting, AmirAbdollahian affirmed Iran's determination to strengthen sustainable ties and cooperation with Russia, saying that "the joint Iranian-Russian cooperation in Syria was a very successful experience fulfilled at the request of the Syrian government."
The Iranian FM said, "We stress that the Syrian-Syrian dialogue is the only way to solve the Syrian crisis and endorse the Iranian-Russian cooperation in the Astana Process."
On his part, Lavrentiev said that "the Iranian-Russian talks on Syria are important."
In a related context, the Russian delegation met with Ali Asghar Khaji, Senior Adviser to the Iranian Foreign Minister for Special Political Affairs. During the meeting, they discussed regional cooperation and the situation in Syria.
Referring to Iran and Russia's cooperation in combating terrorism in Syria, Khaji stressed the need for close cooperation between the two countries in preserving sovereignty, reconstruction, and contribution to Syria's stability.
Khaji clarified that his country hosted a summit for those contributing to the Astana Process, stressing the vitality of finding a political solution to the Syrian crisis in the Astana Process and continuing the Syrian-Syrian talks within the framework of the Constitutional Committee.
The Russian delegation mirrored Khaji's stance and capitalized on the importance of strengthening the Syrian-Syrian dialogue, announcing Russia's readiness to hold meetings and bilateral negotiations as part of the Astana Process.
It is worth noting that Lavrentiev met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus on October 18, 2021, to discuss various issues and bilateral cooperation.
