With regard to the Syrian issue, the Venezuelan president said that Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad is "a brave man, a hero and a fighter, and he has a beautiful family and wonderful people," adding that "(Syria) was destined to endure a criminal terrorist war."

As for Iran, Maduro expressed his admiration for the Iranian leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, describing him as a man of great wisdom and great intelligence.

He pointed out that the former Quds Force commander, the martyr Qassem Soleimani, "was a smiley, optimistic man, and I thank God forever meeting him," noting that "Soleimani combated terrorism and the brutal terrorist criminals who attacked the peoples of the Axis of resistance. He was a brave man."

Al Mayadeen network had chosen the Venezuelan president to be the "International Person of the Year" for 2019, against the background of his stances towards his country and its foreign policies, but it was not possible to hand him the award due to the Coronavirus epidemic.
