Liberal MPs reportedly plan to demand Trudeau's resignation as leader
Discontent with Trudeau’s leadership has surged within the party in recent weeks, largely driven by the loss of two key by-elections in Toronto and Montreal.
Canadian news reports on Monday reveal that a group of MPs from Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party are planning to demand that the prime minister step down from his role as party leader.
According to CTV News, a faction of Liberal MPs has been organizing over the past 10 days, with anonymous sources confirming their efforts.
The group is expected to formally request Trudeau's resignation during next Wednesday’s caucus meeting. The matter will reportedly be discussed directly with Trudeau and kept out of the public eye.
CTV News also reported that it spoke to around 35 Liberal MPs in recent days, with five expressing support for the plan to remove Trudeau as party leader.
Liberals want Trudeau out
Discontent with Trudeau’s leadership has surged within the party in recent weeks, largely driven by the loss of two key by-elections in Toronto and Montreal.
These districts, traditionally strongholds for the Liberals, were previously considered safe.
Now, party members critical of Trudeau are pushing for his resignation as leader ahead of the federal election set for late October 2025.
In an interview with CTV News on Tuesday, Montreal Liberal MP Anthony Housefather did not directly deny the existence of a movement within the party aimed at challenging Trudeau's leadership.
"I support whoever is leader of my party at all times, but that doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be a robust caucus discussion about who the best person to lead us in the next election is," he said.
Several Liberal MPs have already publicly expressed their opposition to Trudeau. For example, Sean Casey, the MP for Charlottetown, stated that an increasing number of voters in his district have voiced dissatisfaction with the prime minister and his management of the party's affairs.
"The message that I’ve been getting loud and clear – and more and more strongly as time goes by – is that it is time for [Trudeau] to go. And I agree," the MP said.
