Libya: Gaddafi's Son Registers as Presidential Candidate
Late Muammar Gaddafi's son, Seif Al-Islam, is running for the 2021 Libyan presidential elections.
An official at the High National Elections Commission in Libya said that Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi, son of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, registered his name today, Sunday, as a candidate for the presidential elections to be held on December 24th, 2021.
A statement by the commission revealed that Gaddafi submitted his papers, completing "all the required legal conditions" for candidacy at the High Electoral Commission in Sabha, southwest Libya. He was issued a voter registration card upon submitting the documents.
On Monday, the commission announced its opening for registration for the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections. The ongoing registration for presidential elections will run till November 22, while applications for parliamentary elections candidacy will run till December 7.
The presidential elections in Libya are scheduled to be held in two rounds, the first starting on December 24, and the second starting with the parliamentary elections 52 days after the first round.
Seif Al-Islam has not been seen since June 2014 until one of his most recent interviews, where he spoke to the New York Times, saying that he wanted to "restore the lost unity" in Libya.
ICC: Seif Al-Islam is still wanted
The International Criminal Court reported Sunday that Seif Al-Islam Gaddafi is still wanted after the latter registered as a candidate.
ICC Spokesperson Fadi Abdullah told Sputnik the court does not comment on political affairs, "but in the legal aspect of things, the arrest warrant is still in force, and that has not changed."
