Majority of Canadians support Trudeau's resignation: Poll
Over 80% of Canadians approve of Justin Trudeau's resignation, although his decision has not impacted popular support for the Liberal Party.
An Ipsos poll found that over 80% of Canadians support Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's decision to step down, although the move has not boosted the ruling Liberal Party's popularity.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday his decision to step down as leader of the ruling Liberal Party after nine years in office. Trudeau stated he would remain in his position until the party selects a new leader, with no election expected before May.
The poll revealed that 81% of Canadians approve of Trudeau's resignation, with 51% expressing "strong approval." Among Liberal supporters, 70% approve of his decision, compared to 88% of Conservative voters. Meanwhile, 19% of Canadians disapprove, including 30% of Liberal voters and 12% of Conservatives.
Despite this, support for the Liberal Party remains near a record low at 20%, while the opposition Conservative Party has gained ground, reaching 46% in public support.
When asked whether they would vote for a Liberal Party not spearheaded by Trudeau, 57% of poll takers responded negatively, while 23% said they would consider it.
Moreover, when assessing Trudeau's performance throughout his tenure, almost every four in ten Canadians (38%) gave him an F, while only 4% gave him an A.
Former Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland is the leading candidate to replace Trudeau as Liberal leader, with 29% of voters backing her and 24% indicating they would support the Liberals under her leadership.
