Maldives resumes ties with Iran following Saudi-Iranian détente
The Republic of Maldives is resuming diplomatic ties with Iran almost 7 years after severing them.
The Republic of Maldives will resume diplomatic ties with Iran after the Saudi-Iranian reconciliation deal, the Maldivian government announced on March 13 in a statement.
"The government of the Republic of Maldives welcomes the Joint Trilateral Statement by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran," read the statement.
Under former President Abdullah Yameen, the Maldives severed political ties with Iran in May 2016.
According to an Iranian-Saudi joint statement, "The Islamic Republic of Iran and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have agreed to resume diplomatic ties and reopen embassies and missions within two months of talks."

China hosted and sponsored the talks between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran to resolve their disagreements and work toward enhancing regional and international peace and security.
Both Tehran and Riyadh expressed their appreciation to Iraq and Oman, who hosted the rounds of dialogue, and China for brokering and sponsoring the talks.
