Medvedev responds to latest EU sanctions: 'Another act of hostility'
The head of Russia's National Security Council wrote on Telegram that the European Union has "once again demonstrated that it is willing to sacrifice the sovereign interests of both its member states and ordinary Europeans."
Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev took to Telegram on Tuesday to respond to the EU's latest adoption of the 14th package of sanctions against Russia.
"So the 14th package of sanctions will not reach the goal, but will be yet another act of hostility," he wrote on Telegram, adding, "The European Union has once again demonstrated that it is willing to sacrifice the sovereign interests of both its member states and ordinary Europeans."
The 14th package was adopted on Monday, imposing a ban on the transshipment of Russian liquefied natural gas in EU ports. Medvedev said the EU "are keen on foiling any Russian commercial activity without losing anything themselves."
LNG gas targeted in new package
The European Union imposed a new set of sanctions against Russia, specifically targeting supplies of liquefied natural gas (LNG). This comes as several member states continue to purchase LNG from Russia, despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The new restrictions will also focus on tankers transporting Russian oil and will expand the EU blacklist to include over 40 individuals and organizations.
Dutch Foreign Minister Hanke Bruins Slot stated that the sanctions aimed to prevent Russia's "shadow fleet" from accessing European ports and services.
According to the Financial Times, the new package will prohibit Russian tankers from using EU ports to transfer cargo between larger and smaller tankers destined for third countries, among other measures, but does not include a ban on EU imports.
