Meet the new President of Iran: Masoud Pezeshkian
His career path includes being a cardiac surgeon by training, serving as Iran's former health minister.
The Iranian presidential runoff election declared parliamentarian and former Health Minister Masoud Pezeshkian as its winner after defeating rival Saeed Jalili, and succeeding the late Ebrahim Raisi.
According to the official figures from the Ministry, Pezeshkian received 16,384,403 votes, compared to 13,538,179 votes for conservative candidate Saeed Jalili, thus becoming the ninth elected president of the Islamic Republic of Iran since the victory of the Islamic Revolution led by Imam Khomeini in 1979.
Born in Mahabad, West Azarbaijan province on September 29, 1954, Pezeshkian has most recently served as a representative for Tabriz in northwest Iran, in the 12th Iranian Parliament.
His career includes working his way up to become President Mohammad Khatami's Health Minister from 2001 to 2005.

Cardiac surgeon and university chancellor
Pezeshkian was chosen to serve in parliament for the eighth, ninth, 10th, and 11th parliament. He also served as first deputy speaker from 2016 until 2020.
A cardiac surgeon by training, he was previously chancellor of the Tabriz University of Medical Sciences and is now a faculty member at the esteemed institution in northern Iran.

He presented his ideas, stressing the value of assigning seasoned professionals in his management.
Along with declaring that Sayyed Ali Khamenei, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, would be followed in all matters, he also named Javad Zarif, the former foreign minister of Iran, as his candidate to lead the foreign ministry.
He has stressed the need for unity among all political parties in the country and advocated for actions based on principles of justice and righteousness.
Reiterating the nation's foreign policy principle, "Neither East nor West," he outlined his administration's dedication to furthering the interests of the country abroad.
Pezeshkian emphasized the need to diversify foreign policy alternatives in order to improve commerce and engagement, while also underscoring the significance of prioritizing partnerships with neighboring countries and extending global ties in order to encourage the country's prosperity.
He repeatedly reaffirmed his dedication to upholding the laws of the Islamic Republic and the directives issued by Sayyed Ali Khamenei.
