The US Department of Defense said it was monitoring the Russian forces' "extraordinary" activities near Ukraine.

"What I can tell you is that we're aware of public reports of unusual Russian military activity near Ukraine, and we're going to continue to consult with allies and partners on this issue," Pentagon Spokesperson John Kirby said.

Kirby noted that "any escalatory or aggressive actions would be of great concern to the United States."

Last April, US President Joe Biden pledged the United States' "unwavering" support for the "sovereignty of Ukraine" during a phone conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky.

President Biden affirmed that "the visit will affirm the United States’ unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of Russia’s ongoing aggression in the Donbas and Crimea", according to a White House statement.
