Mullah Baradar in Afghanistan to Establish New Government
Days after the Taliban assumed control of Afghanistan, the movement's co-founder arrives in Kabul for talks with Taliban officials on establishing a new ‘inclusive’ government.
Taliban co-founder, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, arrived Saturday in Afghanistan's capital, Kabul, for talks on establishing a new inclusive government, a senior Taliban official told AFP.
A Taliban official said Mullah Baradar would meet with former Prime Ministers, local militias, and religious scholars, announcing that the Taliban would form two independent teams to manage internal security and the financial crisis. "We will use the help of experts from previous governments for crisis management," he added.
The official stated that the Taliban did not kidnap any foreigners; however, they are to interrogate some of them before they leave the country.
Mullah Baradar returned to Afghanistan from Qatar two days after the Taliban captured the country. He was head of the movement's political bureau in Qatar.
That was the first time that the senior official came to Afghanistan since the US-led coalition toppled the Taliban following the 9/11 attacks.
Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General, held a press conference Friday at the United Nations Headquarters, New York, in which he discussed the latest Afghan developments. "I'm ready to speak to the Taliban," he said, expressing his hope for the formation of an 'inclusive' government in Afghanistan.
