New Zealand lists Proud Boys, other US far-right group as terrorist
Wellington is attempting to shield the country from white supremacy.
New Zealand has declared the Proud Boys and The Base, two far-right American groups, to be terrorist organizations.
The two terrorist groups have joined 18 others, including ISIS, in being designated as terrorist - this will make it essentially illegal in the country to fund, recruit or participate in such groups, as it would subject them to legal action.
Although the two groups are not known to be active in New Zealand, the country has been on high alert towards supremacy and extremist threats, especially after a White supremacist shot, in cold blood, 51 Muslim worshippers at two mosques in Christchurch in 2019.
The Proud Boys are a far-right group which has been largely responsible for the January 6 Capitol riots, which were conspired by former US President Donald Trump.
Earlier this month, the national chairman of the right-wing Proud Boys group, Enrique Tarrio, in addition to other top leaders, have been charged with seditious conspiracy for planning to storm the US Capitol to overturn the election results.
