Nicaragua Prepares to Hold Presidential Elections on Sunday
In tomorrow's elections, if he were to win, Nicaraguan President Ortega would be running as the longest-serving president in the Americas until 2027.
As Nicaragua's presidential elections approach on Sunday, November 7, 2021, the Supreme Electoral Council and the Army distribute election ballots and urns throughout the nation.
General Julio Cesar Aviles, the Chief of the Nicaraguan Army, in a televised interview on November 1, spoke of the army's support and supervision for the nationwide elections, reiterating his support for the Supreme Electoral Council which will be responsible for organizing the elections and counting the votes.
“We respect the vote of our people who hold sovereignty to elect our authorities, and it is the Supreme Electoral Council who will establish who is elected in this electoral process,” said Aviles.
Daniel Ortega, who is the current President of Nicaragua, is running for his fourth term in the elections - he, and his wife Vice President Rosario Murillo, are met by 3 opposing candidates in the elections.
Recently, Ortega has ordered the imprisonment of 7 potential candidates, which the US and the EU have openly denounced. The candidates were imprisoned on the count of money laundering and treason.
A number of parties will be participating in the event: Along with Ortega, the Constitutional Liberal Party, the Independent Liberal Party, the Nicaraguan Liberal Alliance, the Nicaraguan Christian Way, and the Alliance for the Republic will be involved.
If Ortega were to win, he will be running as the longest-serving president in the Americas until 2027.
