On the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism, Hamas has called on the international community and the United Nations to take steps to protect Palestinians against Israeli aggression, Basem Naim, a member of the movement's political bureau in Gaza, said on Wednesday.

"Today's remembrance day is a new opportunity to reiterate our appeal to the international community led by the UN and the [UN] Security Council to get out of paralysis and make the necessary steps and decisions to end state 'Zionist terrorism', stop this collective genocide, and prosecute and punish all those who are involved in it," he said.

The Hamas official also urged the United Nations to address the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, highlighting the aspirations of Palestinians for freedom, independence, and the right to return to their homeland.

Naim further said this year, the International Day of Victims of Terrorism falls during the Israeli genocide in Gaza, during which Palestinians are being slain round the clock on live television.

"How is it possible to welcome the mention of victims of terrorism when we let people become victims of it at this very moment?" he asked.

The Israeli occupation continues to commit massacres under the eyes of the entire world, with no respect for international law.

On the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism, the total number of Palestinians killed since the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip started on October 7 has risen to 40,223, in addition to 92,981  injuries, according to the daily report published by the Health Ministry in Gaza on Wednesday.

Yesterday, Al Mayadeen's correspondent reported a devastating attack by Israeli occupation forces on Mustafa Hafez School, a facility in western Gaza City that was serving as a shelter for forcibly displaced individuals.

According to Palestinian sources, more than 20 individuals are feared trapped under the rubble.

The Gaza Civil Defense has confirmed that at least 12 people were killed in the Israeli attack.

Mustafa Hafez School, which was housing over 700 forcibly displaced persons, is reported to have been directly targeted by Israeli airstrikes.
