Candidates nominating themselves to replace Pakistan's ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan have filed their nomination papers on Sunday, a mere hours after Imran Khan lost the national assembly's no-confidence vote.
The current front-runners in the race for office, according to the Dawn daily, are opposition leader Shehbaz Sharif and former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi from Khan's Tehreek-e-Insaf party.
The parliament voted Saturday to dismiss Khan, cut short his four-year term and will meet again on Monday to elect a new prime minister.
After being ousted, Khan again accused foreign powers, chiefly the US, of being behind a regime-change conspiracy in Pakistan, announcing the beginning of a freedom struggle.
Khan's Tehreek-e-Insaf party called for nationwide demonstrations against the plot to install an "imported" government in Pakistan. Protests were scheduled for 9:30 pm local time.
